About
Renters do months of research to avoid a bad building, and the information that matters is scattered across dead forums, private Facebook groups, and Reddit threads nobody answers. We put it in one place, free, for Toronto.
Where the data comes from
- City scores & building facts: City of Toronto Open Data — RentSafeTO Apartment Building Evaluation and Registration datasets, used under the Open Government Licence – Toronto. Registration facts (elevator counts, heating, pets policy) are reported by building owners to the City.
- Short-term-rental counts: City of Toronto Short Term Rentals Registration dataset, refreshed daily, matched to building addresses.
- Citations: where a building has significant published coverage (news, tribunal decisions, large public discussion threads), we link it and summarize it neutrally.
- Resident reviews: submitted by people who live or lived in a building, moderated by a human before publication.
This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the City of Toronto. Colour categories shown for scores follow the City's published RentSafeTO thresholds (green 85–100, yellow 70–84, red 0–69).
Review rules
- Reviews are about buildings, condo corporations, and management companies — never about individual people. Reviews naming individuals are edited or rejected.
- Structured ratings first; free text should be factual and first-hand. Accusations of crime, fraud or dishonesty are not published.
- Reviewers are anonymous to the public but must verify an email with us and attest their review is truthful and first-hand.
- Every submission is read by a human before it appears.
Corrections & takedown
If you believe something on this site is false, defamatory, or unfairly presented — whether you're a resident, owner, or property manager — email corrections@buildingcheck.ca with the building address and the specific statement. Our commitment:
- We acknowledge within 72 hours.
- Contested factual claims in reviews are temporarily unpublished while we forward the complaint to the reviewer for response.
- City data is presented as published by the City; if it's wrong at the source, we'll link your correction request to the relevant City process and note the dispute on the page.
- Every complaint and action is logged.
Add a building
Rental buildings covered by RentSafeTO appear automatically. Condo towers are added by hand — if yours is missing, email hello@buildingcheck.ca with the address and anything a future renter should know, or just submit a review and we'll create the page.
Who runs this
An independent Toronto renter who got tired of finding out about buildings' problems only after googling for hours. No landlord, brokerage, or listing-site money. If that ever changes, it'll say so on this page.
